New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigns after sexual harassment investigation
New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell has resigned after a state investigation found that he violated ethics rules and engaged in conduct that amounted to sexual harassment.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Caldwell’s resignation Friday afternoon, saying he submitted it earlier in the day after she called on him to step down.
The 61-page investigation found credible evidence that Caldwell made a romantic advance toward a female staff member’s friend. After she rejected him, investigators said he made a derogatory comment about women.
The report also found that Caldwell tried to help a state employee he was dating obtain a promotion. Investigators said he did not initially disclose the relationship and continued supporting her candidacy after learning about the investigation. She ultimately did not receive the promotion and no longer works for the state.
Investigators also found that Caldwell brought personal guests, including his girlfriend, to ticketed events without receiving the required authorization or paying for admission.
Caldwell’s attorney, Thomas Calcagni, disputed the investigation, calling the process one-sided and arguing that Caldwell was not given adequate due process.
Sherrill said the investigation showed what she described as a pattern of concerning behavior and said Caldwell’s resignation would allow the administration to move forward.
Caldwell also served as New Jersey’s secretary of state and oversaw elections. Sherrill has 45 days to appoint a replacement. State Comptroller Shirley Emehelu has been named acting secretary of state while a replacement for that position is selected.
The investigation was launched in May after an anonymous letter raised allegations about Caldwell’s behavior during official trips and state events.
