Mitch McConnell released from rehabilitation center
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been discharged from the rehabilitation center he’s been in since he fell in his home in June.
In a statement from his office, McConnell said he and his wife, Elaine Chao, “are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists and hospital staff.”
“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” he said.
Questions arose surrounding McConnell’s condition since his hospitalization on June 14. After weeks of speculation, McConnell put out a health update, including a picture of himself and his wife, stating he was left “briefly unconscious” after he suffered a fall. The 84-year-old senator has not cast a Senate vote or participated in official business since suffering the fall.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke,” McConnell wrote in his first health update. “I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was one of several officials to demand McConnell prove he is still capable of serving.
The Democratic governor sent a letter to McConnell in July, asking him to speak directly to Kentuckians or resign, saying written medical updates are no longer enough to show that Kentucky’s senior senator can still do the job.
McConnell is not seeking reelection.
