Minneapolis police release bodycam footage of deadly apartment shooting
Minneapolis police have released body camera footage from an apartment building shooting earlier this month in which a gunman killed two men and injured three other people. Officers shot and killed the gunman during an exchange of gunfire that also injured two officers.
The Minneapolis Police Department released the footage on Wednesday from the September 2 shooting at Shoreline Plaza, an apartment complex at 15 East Grant Street in downtown Minneapolis.
The shooting began at 4:36 p.m. outside the building during what officials described as an apparent arranged custody exchange between the suspect and a woman with whom he had previously been in a relationship. The woman was shot in the leg, while the child escaped unharmed.
The gunman entered the building and shot two employees on the first floor. A female employee suffered critical injuries.
He then took an elevator to the ninth floor, where he fatally shot Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse Abdi Afrah, 61, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
Officers arrived within minutes and followed the sound of gunfire up a stairwell. A haze obscured the ninth-floor hallway before two exchanges of gunfire in which the suspect was killed. City officials later confirmed that the haze came from a fire extinguisher struck by gunfire.
Officer Joseph Michnowski was shot in the abdomen and underwent surgery. Officer Yahye Ahmed, who was shot in the leg and fired his weapon, was released from the hospital the following day. A third officer suffered minor injuries from flying glass.
Police identified the suspected gunman as 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson II. He was armed with a handgun and had a valid permit to carry.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was undergoing eviction proceedings, with a trial scheduled for September 11, following months of complaints involving weapon brandishing and lease violations.
Records also showed that he emailed a threat to building management hours before the shooting. The threat was being processed as a terroristic threat report when the attack occurred.
