Mexico’s president considers legal action after Musk claims she takes orders from cartels
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she is reviewing possible legal action after Elon Musk accused her of saying what her “cartel bosses” tell her to say.
Speaking Tuesday at her daily press briefing in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said her lawyers are examining Musk’s comments. “We are considering whether to take some legal action,” she said. “The lawyers are reviewing it.”
Musk wrote on X on Monday that “She’s just saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say. Let’s just say that their punishment for disobedience is a little worse than a ‘performance improvement plan’ …”
Responding to the accusation, Sheinbaum rejected claims that her administration is a “narco-government” and defended the work of Mexico’s armed forces. She said the debate over sanctioning false statements is complex and questioned where the line should be drawn between penalties and censorship.
On Sunday, Mexican forces carried out an operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG. The operation was supported with logistical and intelligence assistance from the Trump administration.
After Oseguera Cervantes was killed, cartel members launched coordinated retaliatory attacks across 20 of Mexico’s 32 states, from Tijuana near the U.S. border to Cancun on the Caribbean coast.
Authorities said at least 25 National Guard members were killed in the violence, along with 30 suspected CJNG members. Most of the attacks were concentrated around Guadalajara and the resort city of Puerto Vallarta in the western state of Jalisco, where stores and vehicles were set on fire.
