Man arrested after killing his father, setting home on fire in New York
A man wanted in connection with the killing of his 70-year-old father, whose body was found after a fire at his home in Orange County, New York, was captured following a multi-day search, according to state police.
Thomas D. Ryan was taken into custody by a New York State Police tactical team at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday after a community member reported seeing him in the Town of Gilboa.
The arrest came hours after another tip led police to Ryan’s Toyota Prius, which was found unoccupied in a parking lot at 199 State Route 990V in Gilboa. State police, environmental police and sheriff’s deputies searched the surrounding area before receiving the second tip.
The suspect was wanted in connection with the homicide of his father, Robert Ryan, whose body was discovered Thursday at his home at 512 Greenville Turnpike in the Town of Greenville following reports of a structure fire.
State police said the suspect did not live with his father and had no known current ties to the Greenville community.
The suspect had been living a transient lifestyle and previously stayed at shelters across New York City, Long Island and northern New York, according to police.
He received medical treatment at the scene for injuries suffered before his arrest and was taken to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition under police custody.
