Kentucky state trooper shot and killed on interstate; suspect sought
A Kentucky state trooper has been shot and killed while patrolling an interstate in the Bowling Green area, according to officials. A search for the suspect is continuing, and a Blue Alert remains in effect.
The shooting happened on Monday on northbound Interstate 65 near mile marker 38 in Warren County, according to Kentucky State Police. The agency identified the trooper as Hayden Phillips, who was assigned to its Bowling Green post.
Police are searching for a bluish-gray Honda Civic with Alabama license plate TN018596, which they said was present during the shooting. Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to contact law enforcement.
The exact circumstances remain unclear, including what led to the shooting and whether Phillips had stopped the vehicle. Authorities have not released a suspect description or explained the role of the Honda’s occupants.
The continuing search is accompanied by a Blue Alert, a public notification used to help locate suspects in attacks on law enforcement officers.
“Hayden was a hero who dedicated himself to protecting our commonwealth,” Governor Andy Beshear said in a statement. “Even more, he was a devoted husband and loving father to three children.”
Phillips, whose unit number was 369, graduated from the state police academy’s Cadet Class 103. His age and length of service were not immediately provided.
“Our hearts break for Trooper Phillips’ family, loved ones, and fellow troopers as we grieve this tremendous loss,” Kentucky State Police Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. said.
