Kayaker bitten twice by shark he caught off California coast
A kayaker has been hospitalized after a shark he caught while fishing bit him twice off Malibu, California, according to fire officials. He fell into the water after the first bite.
The incident was reported at 8:32 a.m. Sunday near Paradise Cove, in the 28200 block of West Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The kayaker was fishing about a half-mile offshore when he caught the shark. As he tried to release it, the shark bit him, causing him to fall out of the kayak. It then bit him a second time.
Officials said the victim was transported to a local hospital by 8:55 a.m.
The New York Post reported that footage from the rescue showed a lifeguard rushing through the water, with a small boat nearby. A man could also be seen swimming toward the boat, but it was unclear whether he was the injured kayaker.
The shark may have been a mako, a fast-swimming shark with a streamlined body and pointed snout. The species has not been confirmed by officials. The kayaker’s condition was not immediately known.
