Israeli strike in Qatar rattles US ally, undercuts Trump peace push

Israel’s latest airstrike inside Qatar has become a controversial topic. It’s sending shockwaves through the region and sparking tension with the United States.
Israeli warplanes targeted what leaders called a Hamas meeting site in Doha, just blocks from embassies and schools.
The bombing killed several people, including Hamas’ chief negotiator’s son and a Qatari security officer. Hamas said the Israeli strike failed to kill senior officials, however. According to ABC News, senior leadership was in Qatar to attend ceasefire talks.
Following the attack, Israeli officials quoted in various news outlets have voiced skepticism about the strike’s success and raised significant concerns about its impact.
Response to the strike
Qatar’s prime minister condemned the attack, calling it “barbaric” and a direct attempt to sabotage ceasefire talks backed by Trump. U.S. allies, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, promised their support to Qatar following the attack.
On Truth Social, Trump said the strike was Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision, not his. He added that he directed his special envoy to warn Qatar of the attack, but that it was “too late.”
White House statement
In Tuesday’s White House briefing, reporters asked press secretary Karoline Leavitt if there was tension between Trump and Netanyahu.
“The president made his thoughts and concerns about this very clear, and he spoke again both to Prime Minister Netanyahu and also the emir and the prime minister of Qatar after this attack,” Leavitt said. “He assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil.”
Israel said it alone ordered and executed what it called a precise strike.
But with American troops stationed in Qatar, and Qatar a key mediator in the Gaza war, the U.S. is left walking a diplomatic tightrope.
