Iran-linked hackers leak CCTV footage from inside Israeli defense contractor
Surveillance footage from inside an Israeli defense contractor has been leaked online by an Iranian-linked hacktivist group. The hacking collective, known as Cyber Toufan, began publishing the footage to Telegram on Wednesday alongside mechanical drawings of defense hardware.
Experts say the hack had the hallmarks of a sophisticated, state-sponsored attack.
In a post on its website, Cyber Toufan said Maya Engineering was one of 17 defense companies it targeted after Israel killed more than 100 people in Gaza on Wednesday in response to the death of an Israel Defense Forces soldier.
“We, in Cyber Toufan, announce that we have hacked 17 institutions and companies that directly and indirectly serve the Zionist defense and military industries, and have obtained tens of terabytes of personal data, administrative and technical documents, audio calls, and video recordings of these criminals,” the group claimed. “Some designed the rocket, the UAVs, and the tank, while others participated in making their parts and programming their systems, even transporting them to the battlefield.”
Maya Engineering, according to its website, produces products for the civilian, medical and defense industries. A now-deleted section of the website previously listed partners, such as Israel’s Ministry of Defense, as well as Israeli defense contractors Elbit Systems and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd.
Straight Arrow News reached out to Maya Engineering for comment, but did not receive a reply.
‘A chilling escalation’
The leaked data includes 117 surveillance videos from inside the offices of Maya Engineering as well as technical drawings of rocket parts, such as turbines and jet nozzles, for Elbit and Rafael.
The videos show company employees designing rockets and other weapons systems, as well as attending meetings. Videos with visible timestamps indicate that the footage ranges from January to July of this year.
Ensar Seker, chief information security officer at the threat intelligence company SOCRadar, called the hack “a chilling escalation in the tactics used by politically motivated threat actors.”
“This breach isn’t just about data exfiltration; it blends surveillance, psychological operations and highly sensitive military-industrial espionage,” Seker told SAN. “The inclusion of CCTV footage and technical schematics of rocket components signals a sophisticated reconnaissance campaign, likely staged over a prolonged period to maximize both technical and symbolic damage.”
One video appears to show employees working on Rafael’s Iron Beam 450, a laser-based air defense system capable of destroying aerial threats such as drones and rockets. Another video, according to the hackers, shows work being done on a model of Rafael’s SPIKE NLOS, an advanced missile system. Miniature models of Israel’s air defense systems, known as the Iron Dome and David’s Sling, also appear to be present.
The leak also includes screenshots taken from the surveillance footage of individuals working at Maya Engineering.
“Your phone conversations, meetings, and crime details moment by moment, every rocket, plane, vehicle, and system you designed will be available to the world,” the hackers wrote. “You will not escape justice.”
More than 100 hacks in two years
Cyber Toufan first emerged in November 2023 and has claimed responsibility for hacks of more than 100 entities. Reported victims range from businesses such as IKEA Israel to government agencies like the Israeli Ministry of Health.
Nandakishore Harikumar, chief executive officer and founder of the threat intelligence company FalconFeed, told SAN that, although Cyber Toufan presents itself as an independent hacking group, “its operational patterns, timing and strategic focus mirror the hallmarks of Iranian state-aligned cyber activity.”
“The evidence we have does not conclusively prove state control — but it paints a compelling picture of coordination that serves Iran’s geopolitical interests,” Harikumar said. “In modern cyber warfare, attribution is rarely black and white; Cyber Toufan represents that gray zone where ideology, influence and capability intersect.”
