An Indiana police officer has died after being shot while responding to a domestic disturbance, according to officials. A second officer who was also shot is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The shooting occurred Monday just before 6 p.m. in the 100 block of Diplomat Court in Beech Grove, a city southeast of Indianapolis. Officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance inside an apartment when they were shot upon arrival.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that today we lost one of our very own, Officer Brian Elliott,” a Beech Grove official said during a press briefing Monday night. “Our officers put on their uniform every day to serve and protect this community, and Brian made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.”

Officials said Elliott, 33, had been with the department for approximately two years. He was described as a lifelong Beech Grove resident who had long wanted to serve as a police officer in his hometown.

Officer Elliott graduated from IU Indy and attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, where he served as an assistant squad leader, was named an honor graduate, and received the Glenda Mercer Memorial Award for top academic achievement.

A second officer who was shot during the incident remains hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The suspect, 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson, remains at large and a manhunt is underway. Police are searching the Beech Grove area and asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact 911, the Indiana State Police post, or Crime Stoppers.
