A house has exploded in the Illinois village of Moro, scattering debris across the property and sending heavy smoke into the air, according to authorities and local reports. Witnesses reported feeling the blast as far as a mile away.

The explosion happened Saturday afternoon in the 100 block of Vine Street in Moro, a small community in Madison County near St. Louis. Deputies and several fire departments responded, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office asked people to avoid the area.

Photos from the scene showed the home largely reduced to rubble as firefighters sprayed water on flames and thick smoke rising from the wreckage. Debris was scattered across the yard and into the street.

One witness described the explosion as feeling like a plane had crashed.

Authorities have not said whether anyone was inside the home when it exploded or whether there were any injuries. The cause of the explosion is not known, and officials have not released information about damage to neighboring homes.
