Helicopter crashes in Quebec, killing 4 people
A helicopter crashed in the Canadian province of Quebec on Saturday, killing the pilot and three passengers, according to local officials. There were no survivors.
The accident happened just after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday when the helicopter went down and caught fire in a cornfield in Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville, a town about 25 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Montreal.
“The information that we have is that it was shortly after take-off that the helicopter was in distress and then crashed,” police spokeswoman Sgt. Valérie Beauchamp said at a press conference. The aircraft caught fire after the crash and was completely destroyed.
Details about the flight and its passengers were not immediately released but organizers of a local festival, Les Félixeries, said the pilot was 50-year-old Suzanne Jutras. She had previously advertised helicopter tours of the Sainte-Brigide area.
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the death, in a terrible accident, of Suzanne Jutras, our favorite pilot of the past three years,” the festival wrote on Facebook. “We extend our deepest sympathies to her partner, family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her through her passion.”
The cause of Saturday’s crash was not immediately known.
“The investigators just arrived on the scene as we speak so they will analyze the scene, gather as much information as possible regarding the causes and circumstances of what happened, but for now it’s too soon to go into this aspect,” Beauchamp said.
Canadian Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the government was aware of the deadly helicopter crash. “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy,” he said.
