Georgia middle school student arrested over “credible” shooting threat
A middle school student in central Georgia has been arrested after allegedly expressing an intention to carry out a school shooting, according to officials. Authorities described the threat as “serious and credible.”
The juvenile was taken into custody on school grounds at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in Bleckley County, south of Macon. Sheriff Daniel Cape confirmed that the student attended Bleckley County Middle School and that no guns or other weapons were found, WGXA reported.
The Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office said it received information about a “serious and active threat” involving the county’s school system while working with the FBI’s Macon office. Authorities identified and located the juvenile after learning of the alleged intention to carry out a shooting.
“Because of the seriousness and credibility of the information received, investigators immediately began working to identify and locate the individual responsible,” the sheriff’s office said. “We believe the actions taken by law enforcement today prevented a potentially devastating act of violence against our children, educators, and community.”
The student is being held at a Department of Juvenile Justice facility on charges of terrorist threats and acts, with additional charges pending, according to WGXA. The juvenile’s name and age were not released.
In a message to parents, the middle school said law enforcement had notified administrators about threatening comments allegedly made by a student and immediately began investigating.
“At no time were students or staff in danger,” the school said.
