FBI searches through Catalina Foothill in connection to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
The FBI’s Phoenix office says it’s conducting searches in Arizona’s Catalina Foothills on Wednesday in connection with 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since Feb. 1.
“Numerous FBI agents are conducting an extensive search along multiple roadways in the Catalina Foothills area related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the office wrote on X. It asked the motorists to remain cautious when traveling in the area.
Guthrie’s home is located in the foothills, a sparsely populated unincorporated community northeast of Tucson.
The news comes one day after the FBI released doorbell camera photos and videos of a suspect seen on the morning of Guthrie’s disappearance.
The footage shows an individual in a mask and a backpack, but there are no identifying features. After releasing the images, law enforcement took a person of interest into custody, but reports say he was later released.
Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
Nancy Guthrie was last seen shortly before 10 p.m. MST Saturday, Jan. 31, after returning home from dinner with family. When she failed to show up for church the next morning, relatives called the sheriff’s department to check on her well-being.
Authorities said shortly after her disappearance that they believed Guthrie was taken from her bed while she slept and considered the case a criminal abduction.
“We know she didn’t just walk out of there,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously told reporters.
From the start, Nanos emphasized that the case was not dementia-related, as Guthrie was of sound mind. But he said she had limited mobility and could not have left on her own.
Investigators examined Guthrie’s house for days after her disappearance, but provided few details on the scene. However, CBS News obtained video footage showing blood droplets outside the front door, and authorities later said DNA tests confirmed it was Guthrie’s.
Ransom notes
Since Guthrie’s disappearance, the FBI has received numerous reports from news organizations claiming to have received ransom notes for Guthrie, including TMZ. None have been publicly verified.
The most recent ransom note came on Wednesday, when TMZ reported receiving a second note, this time from someone claiming to have information about a suspect. It demands 1 Bitcoin for information on the person the note writer claims kidnapped Guthrie.
Earlier this month, one person was arrested after investigators found that a ransom note was a hoax.
