Employee shoots 3 staff members at Los Angeles senior housing facility
An employee shot three fellow staff members at a senior housing facility in Los Angeles, leaving one critically injured, according to police. The suspect was taken into custody inside the building, and no residents were injured.
The shooting happened at about 10:50 a.m. on Monday at Progressive Home for the Elderly at the corner of 70th Street and Denver Avenue in South Los Angeles. Officers arrived within two minutes of a report of shots fired and found three people with gunshot wounds in the lobby, LAPD Deputy Chief Marc Reina said in a briefing.
Dorothy Mobley, a caregiver who was inside the building, told KTLA she had just arrived when a custodian standing at the lobby desk said, “I’m tired of this.” She said he then pulled out a gun and began shooting.
After finding the victims, officers called for help for a possible active shooter. Additional officers arrived within minutes and searched the building while others provided aid and moved the wounded outside.
Police confirmed that the suspect and all three victims worked at the facility. The victims were described as a Hispanic woman in her 40s, a Black woman in her 70s and a Black man in his 60s. All three were taken to a local hospital, where one was reported in critical condition and two in stable condition.
The suspect, a Black man in his 60s, was found on another floor and taken into custody without incident.
Officers searched all six floors of the building, which contains more than 100 units, and found no additional victims or suspects. Residents stayed in place while police checked on them.
“Over a hundred souls live in this place,” Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson said. “We’ll continue to work with them to investigate, to make sure we keep guns out of places like senior housing facilities.”
Detectives from the LAPD’s 77th Street area are investigating the shooting, including whether the suspect legally possessed the firearm. Police have not released a motive or the names of those involved.
