‘Emergency World Naked Bike Ride’ planned over Portland troop deployment
In response to President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy 200 federalized National Guard troops to Portland, activists are planning a naked bike ride to protest the move. Organizers with the World Naked Bike Ride Portland announced the plan this week in a social media post.
‘Emergency World Naked Bike Ride coming up’
In an Instagram post, the group declared: “Emergency World Naked Bike Ride coming up in response to the militarization of our city.”
A specific date for the event has not been determined, as organizers said in the social media post that “plans are still being worked on.”
Not a new form of activism
Naked bike riding as a form of activism is nothing new for Portlanders, whose annual World Naked Bike ride was born out of resistance to Big Oil’s pollution in the fight against climate change and to promote body positivity.
The upcoming demonstration is being coordinated by a branch of the original World Naked Bike Ride. It comes after the organization created an impromptu event following the cancellation of the event in 2024. The group also organized a naked cycling event this year, raising awareness for environmentalism and efforts to combat climate change.
Trump’s decision and past efforts
Trump announced his plan to deploy federal troops to what he called “War ravaged” Portland on Sept. 27. The order comes after the Trump administration federalized Washington, D.C., to combat crime and deployed National Guard members and U.S. Marines to California earlier this year to quell protests over the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles. Trump has also announced plans to send military personnel to Memphis and floated the idea of sending them to Chicago, to fight against what he considers rampant crime.
Democrats, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, have condemned the military operations in mostly major Democratic cities. Pritzker has resisted efforts by the Trump administration to have troops deployed to his state of Illinois.
