Delta flight from São Paulo to Atlanta returns safely after engine fire; 288 aboard

A Delta Air Lines flight from São Paulo to Atlanta returned safely after an engine fire shortly after takeoff, according to reports. No injuries were reported among the 288 people on board.

The incident happened shortly after Delta Flight 104 departed São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport for Atlanta on Saturday, when the aircraft’s left engine began sparking and caught fire, according to Flightradar24 and footage from the airport.

The plane stayed airborne for about 10 minutes before returning safely to the airport.

Footage also appeared to show burning debris falling from the plane onto the airfield, where a small fire broke out next to the runway.

According to Flightradar24 data, the aircraft was an Airbus A330-323 with registration N813NW. Brazilian aviation outlet AEROIN reported that there were 288 people on board.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear. No injuries were reported among the passengers and crew on board.
