Chemical leak at industrial area near L.A. sends orange plume into sky
An industrial chemical leak sent a large orange plume from a factory near Los Angeles, forcing evacuations within a one-mile radius, according to officials. Hazmat crews have controlled the leak, and authorities say there is no longer an active risk to residents.
The emergency was reported at about 11:54 a.m. Monday at a factory on South Cypress Street in La Habra, California, an industrial area near the Los Angeles County line. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said it established a one-mile evacuation zone.
The City of La Habra said first responders found orange smoke coming from the roof of the building, which manufactures industrial chemicals. Los Angeles County fire hazmat teams entered the facility and brought the leak under control.
The orange plume later dissipated, but air monitoring remains underway. Officials have not said which chemical or chemicals leaked into the air.
La Habra police and the Los Angeles County Fire Department remain in unified command. Streets between Euclid Street and Harbor Boulevard, as well as Cypress Street between La Habra Boulevard and Lambert Road, were closed during the response.
