Bus fire fills D.C. tunnel with heavy smoke
A bus caught fire inside a tunnel in Washington, D.C., sending heavy smoke into the air, according to fire officials. No injuries were initially reported.
The fire was reported at about 7 p.m. Thursday in the 9th Street tunnel in northwest Washington, according to the DC Fire and EMS Department. Fire officials said the Metrobus was well involved when crews arrived, and they requested a foam unit task force, an additional truck and a rescue squad.
Only the driver was on the bus when the fire broke out, and he was not injured.
Fire officials said people who had been inside vehicles in the tunnel were evacuated as crews worked the scene. The fire was mostly out by 8:12 p.m., though firefighters were still dealing with hotspots.
Webcam footage showed heavy smoke rising in the background behind landmarks including the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.
Officials have not said what caused the fire or when the tunnel will reopen.
