Boxer Prichard Colón dies at 33, years after suffering brain injury in fight
Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón, who suffered a life-altering brain injury during a 2015 fight, has died, his father announced. He was 33.
“I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world,” his father, Richard Colón, said in a statement. “He is now in a better place.”
Colón was an undefeated rising welterweight prospect when he faced Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, in October 2015. He had a professional record of 16 wins, including 13 knockouts.
During the fight, Colón was repeatedly struck in the back of the head. After the bout, he became ill in his dressing room and was taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain bleed and underwent emergency surgery.
He spent months in a coma and required long-term care after the injury.
“Prichard showed a level of strength and courage that transcended the boxing community and inspired people around the world throughout his journey,” the World Boxing Council said. “Prichard’s fighting spirit will never be forgotten.”
His father thanked supporters for “so many years of love and prayers” and asked that they keep the family in their prayers.
