A college student in Atlanta died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after accidentally shooting another student in a classroom, according to police. The injured student was taken to a hospital.

Officers responded to Atlanta Technical College at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW at about 8:45 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report of a person shot, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a student was in a classroom with a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking another student in the leg. The student with the gun then ran into a bathroom, where police say he sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers found him dead inside the bathroom. WXIA identified him as 60-year-old Donald Silva.

The other student was taken to a hospital by ambulance and was alert, conscious and breathing, according to police. Further details about the student’s condition were not immediately available.

A college spokesperson told WXIA that Georgia law allows students to carry guns on campus and in classrooms. Police say the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.

“The campus was secured following the incident, and classes and operations have since resumed,” the college spokesperson told WXIA.
