At least 2 killed in livestreamed school shooting in the Philippines
At least two people have been killed and several others injured in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines, according to preliminary information. The suspected gunman is believed to have livestreamed the attack.
The shooting happened at about 8:30 a.m. local time Tuesday at Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School in Zamboanga City, on the southern tip of the Philippines.
The footage, which appears to have been recorded by the gunman, shows the perpetrator walking to the front of a classroom with a rifle and pointing it at a teacher. The weapon appears to jam as students look on in confusion, but the shooter attempts to fire it again and a shot is fired in the teacher’s direction.
The suspect then enters the classroom as students begin to flee. He goes into a second classroom, takes out a pistol and appears to try to fire at students, but that weapon also appears to jam. He is then seen shooting at least three students, some of whom were unable to escape.
The suspected gunman has been identified by local media as a seventh-grade student at the school. Authorities have not identified the suspect or released a possible motive.
Local media reported that at least two people were killed and an unknown number of others were injured. Reports also said the suspected gunman died by suicide, though it was not immediately clear whether he was included in the reported death toll.
The shooting comes about two months after two students opened fire at a high school in Tacloban, killing three people and injuring 20 others.
