Armed suspect firing shots in Michigan’s Calhoun County; residents told to stay inside

An armed suspect is firing shots in Calhoun County, Michigan, according to an emergency alert. Residents in the affected area have been told to stay inside and lock their doors.

The alert was issued Monday evening for the area of Running Deer Ridge Drive in Leroy Township, south of Battle Creek, Michigan. Police are at the scene, but the suspect is not in custody.

“STAY INSIDE and AWAY FROM EXTERIOR WALLS,” Calhoun County 911 said in the alert. People traveling on foot or in vehicles are told not to approach the area.

Authorities closed 6 Mile Road between Running Deer Ridge and Lyman Road while the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department worked at the scene. Only emergency personnel were being allowed through the closure, according to a separate notice from county dispatchers.

The alerts did not provide information about possible injuries, what led to the shooting or whether anyone was being targeted.
