A man armed with a gun and a knife was shot and killed by a security officer at a federal courthouse in Nashville, Tennessee, according to authorities. Police believe he tried to fire the gun at the entrance checkpoint, but it did not discharge.

The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the courthouse in the 700 block of Church Street. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) identified the man as 42-year-old Jack Henson II, who was from out of state, according to Nashville police.

Don Aaron, public affairs director for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said in a briefing that the man entered through the courthouse’s front door and approached the security checkpoint with a pistol.

“We believe that the individual attempted to discharge the gun, but it did not fire,” Aaron said.

The man then switched to a knife during a confrontation with an officer staffing the checkpoint. The officer opened fire, critically injuring him.

He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert McGuire said the officer was a member of court security working with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Police also searched the car in which the man arrived, which was parked on Seventh Avenue and had a North Carolina license plate. A police dog team and officers checked the vehicle and found nothing threatening inside, Aaron said.

TBI agents are investigating at the request of District Attorney General Glenn Funk and the U.S. Marshals Service. They are collecting evidence and conducting interviews to establish the sequence of events leading to the shooting.
