Train derailment in Texas prompts hazmat response
A Union Pacific train derailed in northern Texas Tuesday afternoon, and it’s being treated as a hazmat situation, according to authorities. Small grass fires have also been sparked by the derailment. Fire crews are actively working to contain them, and no nearby structures are currently at risk.
Just after 2 p.m. local time, emergency crews responded to a major train derailment about 2 miles east of Gordon, Texas, which is around 90 minutes west of Dallas-Ft. Worth. Officials haven’t given any suspected reason for the derailment.
A representative with Union Pacific told Straight Arrow News that around 35 rail cars went off the tracks. Multiple response teams, including hazmat crews from the rail line, responded to the scene.
Potential hazardous materials involved
The train was possibly carrying hazardous materials; however, there are no reports of hazardous material leaks as of Tuesday afternoon, the Palo Pinto County Emergency Service District 1 said in a Facebook post. No injuries have been reported, and all personnel have been accounted for.
Public asked to avoid area
Palo Pinto County Emergency Services is coordinating with Union Pacific and other agencies to keep residents and first responders safe.
People living close to the derailment are being asked to avoid the area, as it’s unclear what kind of hazardous material the train may have been carrying.
