5 shot outside Virginia State University residence halls; 1 critical

Five people were injured in a shooting outside residence halls at Virginia State University (VSU), with one in critical condition, according to officials.

Officers responded at about 1:28 a.m. Saturday to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, near the Quad Annexes at VSU, and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside the residence halls, according to the university.

All five victims were taken to area hospitals. One remains in critical condition, while the other four suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the victims has been confirmed as a Virginia State student. The student was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

The campus lockdown has been lifted, and police said there is no immediate threat to the university community.
