Trump to hold Monday press conference on violent crime in Washington, DC

President Donald Trump will hold a press conference on Monday, Aug. 11, to share his plans for Washington, D.C.  “On Monday, a Press Conference will be held at the White House which will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World,” he added.

This has recently become a hot topic for the President.

“President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Thursday, Aug.7. “President Trump is committed to making our Nation’s capital safer for its residents, lawmakers and visitors from all around the world.”

By Friday, Aug. 8, members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posted on X photos of their efforts, along with other federal authorities. “Together with our federal law enforcement partners are out ensuring that the residents of the District of Columbia are safer this evening,” the post said.

It all started after a member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was beaten in a carjacking attempt in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug.3. Edward Coristine, 19, was attacked by 10 young suspects outside his car.

“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the city,” Trump posted.

Coristine, now employed by the Social Security Administration, was reportedly involved in the effort to shutter the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He has not commented publicly.

Police arrested a 15-year-old boy and girl in connection with the incident and continue their search for others involved. The two arrested face unarmed carjacking charges.

Even as Trump focuses on crime in D.C., statistics from local police show that it has gone down year-over-year from 2024 by 7%. Violent crime decreased by 26%, and homicides dropped by 12%.

Straight Arrow News reached out to Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for comment. She took office back in 2015.
