Police, a bomb squad and hazardous materials crews responded to U.S. Senator Dave McCormick’s office in Pittsburgh after a suspicious letter was found, according to local officials.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at the Grant Building at 310 Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh. A city public information officer told WPXI that police, the bomb squad and hazardous materials teams were called after the letter was discovered.

The official said the response was being carried out “out of an abundance of caution” and that there was no public safety threat. Details about the letter’s contents were not immediately available.

Fire, bomb squad and hazardous materials trucks were visible outside the building. Hazmat personnel could also be seen entering.

McCormick is a Republican senator representing Pennsylvania who took office in January 2025.

NBC News reported last week that federal authorities are investigating dozens of letters containing suspicious substances sent to congressional offices and state election officials nationwide. The offices of several Democratic senators, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, were among those targeted.

Election offices in at least 15 states, including Pennsylvania, also reported receiving suspicious packages. Preliminary tests indicated that white powder in the mailings was not hazardous, but additional laboratory testing was continuing, according to NBC News.
