1 killed in shooting near mosque in Columbus, Ohio
One person was killed in a shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, according to local and federal officials. Police said there was no indication that the mosque was targeted.
Officers received a report of shots fired just after 2:30 p.m. on Monday in the area of Alrahma Mosque at 2226 Albert Avenue, Columbus Police Sergeant James Fuqua said at a briefing.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) office in Columbus said preliminary information indicated that funeral attendees had exited the mosque when shots were reportedly fired.
One person died from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. ATF said reports of a possible second victim have not been confirmed.
Police Sergeant Fuqua earlier said that authorities were looking into a dispute involving multiple people at an apartment complex and an exchange of gunfire outside. The nature of the dispute and the sequence of events remains unclear.
“This was not an attack on the mosque. Again, there was no specific threat to the mosque,” Fuqua said. “We don’t have any reason to believe this was anything targeted, whether it’s religious or on the mosque.”
