1 killed, 11 injured in new attack on Saudi airport
A new attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has killed one person and injured 11 others, according to local aviation officials. It follows an earlier missile strike that killed 13 people and injured hundreds.
The attack happened Sunday afternoon when an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4, causing a fire, according to coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki.
A Pakistani resident was killed, and the 11 injured people were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the General Authority of Civil Aviation. Officials are still assessing the damage caused by the attack.
India’s embassy said one of its citizens died Sunday from injuries sustained in Saturday’s earlier missile attack on the same airport, bringing the death toll from that strike to 13, according to the Associated Press. Over 300 people were also injured in the previous attack.
Saudi airports have been repeatedly targeted during continuing Houthi missile and drone attacks. King Fahd International Airport in Dammam was also attacked hours after the earlier strike in Riyadh.
The U.S. State Department said it was aware of the attacks on both airports.
“Please take extreme caution when using all major airports in Saudi Arabia,” the U.S. Mission said. “U.S. citizens should be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.”
The Saudi-led coalition said it had carried out a large-scale operation against Houthi personnel and weapons, destroying 136 military targets in areas controlled by the group. Al-Malki said coalition forces were also working to destroy the Houthis’ ballistic missile network and providing air support to Yemeni government forces.
Shortly before the latest Riyadh attack, the Houthis said the airport in Yemen’s rebel-held capital, Sanaa, had been struck and blamed Saudi Arabia, according to AP.
