10 killed, including minor, in Mexican prison shooting
A shooting at a prison in the Mexican state of Sinaloa left 10 people dead, including a minor who was visiting a relative, according to local officials. At least 17 inmates were also injured.
The shooting happened on Thursday afternoon at El Castillo prison in Mazatlan, a city on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The prison director reported an attack involving inmates after gunshots were heard in cellblock 4.
The shooting subsequently spread to cellblock 5, according to Mexican news organization OEM. Military personnel, National Guard members, and state and municipal police responded to the prison.
Nine inmates and the minor were killed, while the 17 injured inmates were taken for medical treatment. Details about their conditions were not immediately available.
“The prison is currently under control,” Sinaloa’s public security department said in a statement, adding that authorities remain at the facility to maintain security.
Preliminary information indicated that at least two 9-millimeter handguns were used in the shooting. State prosecutors will determine how many weapons were used and how many people participated in the attack.
Authorities will also examine how the guns entered the prison and whether anyone helped bring them through security controls.
Sinaloa has been the scene of an internal conflict within the Sinaloa cartel between allies of co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Los Chapitos, a faction associated with the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
The fighting erupted in September 2024, following Zambada’s capture and transfer to U.S. custody in July of that year. Guzman is serving a life sentence in the United States.
