4 firefighters injured in explosion at home in Los Angeles
Five people, including four firefighters, were injured in an explosion at a home in Los Angeles, according to fire officials. The blast occurred after crews entered the basement while responding to a reported refrigerant leak.
The incident was reported at about 10:48 a.m. on Wednesday at 2617 North Lakewood Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood. An HVAC company had reported a Freon leak at the residence, according to KCBS, citing the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Nick Pellegrini said crews went into the basement when the explosion occurred. He described it as “a small explosion, but major enough to cause some injuries to four of our members,” KCBS reported.
The firefighters’ injuries included a concussion-type injury, inhalation injuries and minor burns, according to Pellegrini. Crews quickly extinguished the fire.
The department’s written update said the first arriving firefighters found fire coming from the single-family home and received reports of a possible gas leak. Firefighters entered the structure to battle the flames.
LAFD reported five patients, including four firefighters and one person who was not a department member. Three patients were transported to hospitals, with a fourth transport anticipated.
Pellegrini said two civilians, the homeowner and an HVAC technician, were treated at the scene and declined transport, according to KCBS.
Arson investigators were requested to respond. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
