Westbury High School student killed in Houston shooting identified
A 17-year-old Westbury High School student who was killed in a shooting near the school in Houston has been identified by his family as LePaul Warren.
The shooting was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday on Dryad Street, an off-campus area where students sometimes gather in the morning. Police said someone came from a nearby wooded area, exchanged words with Warren and then opened fire.
Campus police and a staff member responded to the scene and performed “life-saving measures” on Warren while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but he could not be saved.
Speaking to FOX 26, Warren’s uncle, Darwin Prater, remembered the 17-year-old as a talented athlete and a well-liked student.
“He’s a good kid, and you can’t say nothing bad about him,” Prater said. “He’s going to be loved everywhere, and he’s going to be missed by everybody.”
Police have received nicknames for a possible suspect from witnesses, but no official description or identity has been released. Investigators are continuing to search for the shooter and speak with witnesses.
Westbury High School was placed on secure mode during the investigation, but Houston ISD said the campus was not placed on lockdown because the shooting happened off campus. Students and staff at the school remained safe.
The district canceled after-school activities Friday, including the homecoming dance. Crisis counselors were also made available to students and staff.
