2 arrested after police find 30 young men in Wisconsin fraternity hazing incident
Police found about 30 partially clothed young men covered in food and liquids during suspected hazing at a fraternity in Madison, Wisconsin, that is no longer recognized by the University of Wisconsin, officials said. Several had injuries consistent with an assault, and two men were arrested.
Officers responded to the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity in the 100 block of Langdon Street at around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving an anonymous tip, according to the Madison Police Department.
Inside the basement, officers found the young men covered in food, condiments and other liquids. Most were 18 years old, and several had visible injuries that police said were consistent with being physically assaulted.
A thermostat was set to 81 degrees, creating hot and humid conditions, according to police. A photo released by the department showed numerous shirtless young men sitting closely together on chairs and the floor, with food and debris scattered around the basement.
Officers declared the event unlawful and escorted everyone outside. All pledges, or prospective fraternity members, were checked for incapacitation and injuries. Police did not provide further details about the injuries or whether anyone needed hospital treatment.
The fraternity’s president and vice president were present and spoke with responding officers. Brayden J. Klein and Samuel N. Vane, both 20, were arrested for hazing and disorderly conduct and taken to the Dane County Jail.
Alpha Epsilon Pi is not a recognized or accredited student organization, police said. The University of Wisconsin terminated its status more than a decade ago.
With fraternity and sorority recruitment underway, police asked anyone whose safety is jeopardized during the process to contact authorities. Authorities are also seeking information from anyone who witnessed or participated in the incident.
