16 injured as juveniles fleeing police crash into Baltimore bus
Sixteen people were injured when a driver fleeing an attempted traffic stop crashed into a bus in Baltimore, Maryland, according to officials. Several people were critically injured, including at least two juveniles who were in the car.
Officers responded to the crash at East Oliver and North Wolfe streets at about 12:48 p.m. on Thursday, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard J. Worley Jr. The collision involved a car reported stolen and a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus.
Worley said officers received an alert for the stolen vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver fled. Officers requested assistance from the department’s Foxtrot helicopter and saw the car collide with the bus shortly afterward.
The bus was traveling south on North Wolfe Street, while the car was heading east on East Oliver Street. Worley said the damage indicated the car had been traveling at high speed.
Four juveniles were inside the car, and all were taken to hospitals. Worley said at least two were believed to be among the most critically injured. Authorities believe the juveniles had stolen the vehicle.
Twelve people on the bus were injured, including the driver, according to Baltimore Fire Chief Wallace. All but one had gotten out of the bus on their own, and those who had exited were sitting outside when firefighters arrived.
Emergency crews declared a mass casualty incident and used 14 medic units to transport the 16 patients to three trauma centers and another hospital.
“Several of those patients are in critical condition. Several are in serious condition. The majority of them, however, had minor injuries,” Wallace said.
The police department’s Special Investigation Response Team is assisting with the investigation.
