NTSB says Amazon Air plane struck van, SUV after runway overrun in Miami
An Amazon Air cargo plane that overran a runway at Miami International Airport struck a van carrying seven airline contract cleaners and a passing SUV before coming to rest about 1,300 feet beyond the paved surface, according to the NTSB.
The accident happened at 1:53 p.m. EDT on Saturday when Amazon Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 operated by Miami-based 21 Air, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The two pilots were the only people aboard the aircraft.
The flight was the aircraft’s third of the day, after earlier trips from Cincinnati to Miami and from Miami to San Juan.
After landing on Runway 30 at Miami airport, the plane struck navigational aids and other airport equipment before hitting a white Ford Econoline van inside the airport perimeter, according to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy.
The van was carrying seven employees of Professional Ocean Service Corporation, a company that provides contract cleaning services for airlines. The plane then broke through a perimeter fence and struck a Toyota Corolla Cross traveling on Northwest 67th Avenue outside the airport.
It continued through a grassy area and hit a second fence near an area where Tesla robotaxis were parked.
Five people were killed and five others were injured in the incident, including three who remain in critical condition. The NTSB said the victims were in the van and SUV.
“The recovery of victims is most important,” Homendy said. “The investigation and access to the aircraft, as well as evidence, can wait while the recovery operations go forward.”
Investigators have recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. They will examine the crew’s experience and training, 21 Air’s procedures and its relationship with Amazon, air traffic control, FAA oversight and the lack of an engineered materials arresting system at the end of the runway.
The cause of the runway overrun is not yet known.
