Oregon man arrested after firing at tree workers, police drones
A man has been arrested after he allegedly fired about 20 rounds at tree workers and later shot at police drones during a standoff near Oregon City, Oregon, according to authorities. No one was injured.
The incident began at about 2:24 p.m. Saturday on South Rocky Bluff Lane in unincorporated Clackamas County, southeast of Portland, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses told deputies that 53-year-old Erik Gordon Shunn, who lived nearby, was firing at workers who were cutting down trees.
Callers reported that Shunn had several firearms. Deputies set up around his home and launched drones, while a SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. Deputies also evacuated nearby residents and the tree workers.
Police said a drone spotted the suspect using a tractor to knock down trees in his driveway in an apparent attempt to build a barricade. He allegedly fired several shots at the drones before SWAT officers took him into custody shortly before 3:45 p.m.
The suspect’s mother was at the home during the standoff and was not hurt. He was treated at the scene for unknown injuries and taken to a hospital for evaluation before he was booked into the Clackamas County Jail.
Jail records list two felony attempt charges against the suspect, as well as unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangering and first-degree menacing. The sheriff’s office said the expected charges also include attempted second-degree murder and attempted first-degree assault.
