Video shows plane crash into Pennsylvania State Police helicopter

Video has been released showing the moment a small plane crashed into a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, killing the plane’s pilot and injuring two state troopers.

The crash happened at about 6:52 p.m. on Wednesday at Carlisle Regional Airport, where the helicopter was hovering several feet above a grassy area next to a runway during a training exercise.

The Cessna 150 was attempting to land when it veered off the north side of the runway for an “unknown reason” and struck the rear of the helicopter, according to state police.

The video shows the Cessna veering toward the helicopter at the last moment and crashing into it. The plane struck the helicopter’s tail rotor before hitting its main rotor.

“The pilots would not have been able to even see that airplane approaching them,” Pennsylvania State Police Colonel George Bivens said at a briefing on Wednesday. “It hit the rear tail rotor and went into the main rotor of the helicopter, resulting in a very violent crash.”

The Cessna crashed to the ground in pieces, while the helicopter, without its blades and tail boom, rolled over and came to rest on its side and partially on its roof. Both troopers were initially trapped inside, but Corporal Bryce Corman pushed out a window and helped Trooper Jason Mills escape.

Police identified the pilot and sole occupant of the Cessna as 57-year-old Paul William Sokoloski of Hershey, Pennsylvania. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Corman and Mills were airlifted to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Corman has since been released, while Mills remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The FAA and NTSB will lead the investigation, assisted by Pennsylvania State Police.
