A likely tornado has caused damage across Dover, Delaware, knocking down trees and power lines, damaging roofs and leaving debris and flooding in parts of the city, according to authorities. A state of emergency has been declared for the city.

The emergency declaration took effect at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, shortly after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) tornado warning for Dover and surrounding communities.

The warning, which was valid until 6:45 p.m., warned of a damaging tornado in the area. It described the situation as life-threatening and told residents to seek shelter immediately.

Photos from Dover showed scattered debris, damaged roofs, downed trees and power lines, but no major damage has been reported so far. The full extent of the damage is not immediately known.

Dover police said emergency crews are responding throughout the city and warned that roads may be blocked or dangerous because of fallen trees, power lines, flooding and debris.

Residents were told to stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, allowing emergency crews to work safely. Police also asked people not to call 911 except for real emergencies.
