1 in serious condition after lightning strike at Ohio prison
One of seven incarcerated people who remain hospitalized after a lightning strike at a prison in northern Ohio is in serious condition, state officials say. The other six are in stable, non-life-threatening condition.
Nine of the 16 people who were taken to an outside hospital have returned to Grafton Correctional Institution, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC).
The incident occurred Tuesday evening as incarcerated people were returning from the evening meal at the state prison in Lorain County, about 25 miles southwest of Cleveland. Initial reports indicated that lightning struck the facility.
One person was flown by medical helicopter, but officials have not said whether that person is the individual who remains in serious condition. No deaths have been reported and no staff members were injured.
Officials have not disclosed where on prison grounds the strike occurred or whether those taken to the hospital were directly struck by lightning or injured by its effects.
Grafton Correctional Institution houses male inmates and is operated by the ODRC.
