14-year-old arrested after shooting classmate at Georgia high school
A 14-year-old student has been arrested after shooting a classmate inside a bathroom at a Georgia high school, according to officials. The ninth-grade victim was taken to a hospital.
The shooting happened at about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, about 20 miles south of Macon, according to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.
Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said several students were inside a bathroom on the main campus when a verbal argument between two students became physical. One student then pulled out a firearm and shot the other student before fleeing the school.
A school resource deputy reached the wounded student within seconds and applied tourniquets before emergency medical personnel arrived. The student was taken to a local hospital and remains under treatment for a gunshot wound.
The shooting triggered a Code Red, keeping students and staff inside their classrooms, according to WAGA. Officials said the school is now secure.
Investigators reviewed video which showed the suspect leaving campus. He was taken into custody at about 3:20 p.m. in the nearby Huntington Hills neighborhood, less than half a mile from the school, without further incident.
Sheriff Moulton said the suspect and victim are both ninth-grade students at Warner Robins High School. The sheriff’s office initially reported that two students had been taken to a hospital, but later said only one student was injured by gunfire.
“The school threat protocol and our training were followed perfectly today,” Moulton said. “What could have been a much worse incident was minimized to us only having one student injured.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, FBI and Georgia State Patrol responded to assist with the investigation. Authorities are conducting search warrants and following up on information.
