Tropical depression likely to form in Atlantic within days
A tropical depression is likely to form in the central Atlantic within the next few days as a tropical wave moves west toward the Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). A second system farther north could briefly become a tropical depression or storm.
The first system, designated AL92, was located about 700 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands on Tuesday evening, according to the NHC. Its showers and thunderstorms are showing signs of organization.
Environmental conditions are expected to support further development over the next few days as AL92 moves west to west-northwest across the central tropical Atlantic.
The NHC gives the system a 60 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm within 48 hours and an 80 percent chance over the next seven days.
Farther north, the circulation associated with a broad area of low pressure about 900 miles east-northeast of Bermuda became better defined on Tuesday.
The system, designated AL93, could briefly become a tropical depression or storm as it moves east at about 20 mph. It is expected to reach cooler waters by Thursday, ending its opportunity for development.
AL93 has a 40 percent chance of development through both the next 48 hours and seven days.
The next two names on the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season list are Cristobal and Dolly.
