Dallas police officer shot by person he helped off interstate
A Dallas school police officer was shot by a person he had stopped to help after they were found walking on an interstate, according to officials. A possible suspect is in custody.
The shooting happened Thursday after Dallas Independent School District Police Officer Justin Jones was flagged down by someone who reported that a person appeared to be in crisis while walking on the interstate.
Jones got the person off the freeway and drove into a nearby Sam’s Club parking lot for safety, Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said at a briefing. The person opened fire as Jones attempted to speak with them after arriving in the parking lot.
Jones, 39, was shot at least once in the lower body. Another officer arrived and applied a tourniquet before he was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Officials said a “possible” suspect is in custody, but their identity was not immediately released. Additional details about the shooting and Jones’ condition were not available.
“This was not an off-duty job,” Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez said. “He was trying to help a person in crisis and get him away from the danger of the freeway when this happened.”
Jones has served with the Dallas ISD Police Department for 16 years and is assigned to White High School.
