Explosive devices found at Maryland park near D.C.
Several explosive devices were found at a park in Maryland near Washington, D.C., forcing evacuations and a closure that continued into a second day, according to officials. No suspects have been identified.
The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department said the devices were found Sunday at Fort Washington Park, a National Park Service site along the Potomac River. U.S. Park Police evacuated and closed the park after the devices were discovered.
Fire officials said five devices were rendered safe Sunday before operations were suspended after sunset. Additional devices were found Monday morning, though officials did not say how many.
ATF officials said they believe the devices were not recently placed. The devices will be taken to an ATF laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, for further examination.
No arrests had been announced as of Monday, and authorities had not released any description of a suspect or suspects.
Authorities said there is no current threat to the public. They warned that anyone who comes across a similar device should not touch it, leave the area and call 911.
