10 killed, including suspect, nearly 30 injured in school shooting in Canada
Ten people are dead, including the suspect, after a mass shooting at a secondary school and a nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, a small town in western Canada. At least 30 others were injured.
The incident began at approximately 1:20 p.m. Tuesday when police received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Authorities issued an emergency phone alert as officers arrived at the scene.
Police said officers entered the school and discovered six victims dead. The individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
In the initial emergency alert, police described the suspect as a female with brown hair wearing a dress. The suspect’s identity and motive have not been released.
Medical officials said two victims were airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, while a third victim died during transport. Approximately 25 others were treated at a local medical center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities later identified a second crime scene at a nearby home, where two additional victims were found dead. Officers were seen conducting further searches of properties in the area to determine if anyone else was involved.
With 10 dead, the shooting is among the deadliest mass killings in Canadian history. The country’s deadliest mass shooting was a 2020 rampage in Nova Scotia which left 22 people dead.
The deadliest school shooting in Canada was the 1989 École Polytechnique attack in Montreal, which killed 14 women.
