Larry Summers resigns from OpenAI board following Epstein email release
Larry Summers, the former treasury secretary and Harvard University president, announced he is resigning from the OpenAI board and leaving numerous other roles. The news comes after legislators released emails between Summers and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“In line with my announcement to step away from my public commitments, I have also decided to resign from the board of OpenAI,” Summers said in a statement. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the potential of the company and look forward to following their progress.”
Summers stepping back
Earlier this week, Summers announced he was stepping away from public commitments after a new trove of emails revealed his long-running, frequent contact with Epstein. The emails included one sent the day before Epstein’s 2019 arrest..
CBS News reported that Summer also departed positions with Bloomberg News, The New York Times, the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project, the Center for American Progress, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Yale Budget Lab.
Summers served as treasury secretary during the Clinton administration and as a key economic advisor for the Obama administration. Most recently, he has taught two classes at Harvard University, where he previously served as president. The university has launched an investigation into Summer’s relationship with Epstein and others involved in the matter.
Epstein file release
The news comes after both the House and the Senate passed legislation requiring the Justice Department to release all its files related to Epstein.
The legislation now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk.
