4 Miami family members found dead after plane crashes in Bahamas
Four bodies have been recovered after a small plane carrying members of a Miami family went missing off the Bahamas, according to officials.
The Piper PA-34, a five-seat aircraft bearing tail number N212ML, departed Great Harbour Cay, Bahamas, at about 11:12 a.m. Monday with four people aboard.
Air traffic control lost contact with it about 13 miles west of Andros Island, and police received a report that it may have gone down in waters off Red Bays, North Andros, at about 2:20 p.m.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said Tuesday that human remains had been recovered and were being transported to New Providence, where the capital Nassau is located.
The victims were identified as pilot Mario Lamar Sr., 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren Sofi Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22. The family said Mario Lamar had more than 40 years of flying experience.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm all four of our family members have been found deceased,” the family said in a statement. It said the search and recovery effort was carried out alongside family members and civilians who answered its call for help.
“Our relatives ultimately located our loved ones and had to bring them aboard their own vessels,” the family said. “We are now in communication and working with the U.S. Coast Guard to bring our loved ones home safely and with dignity.”
