3 killed, 1 injured as NBC Los Angeles helicopter crashes while covering deadly collision
Three people have been killed and another was injured after an NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashed while covering a deadly SUV-bus crash, according to fire officials and preliminary reports. The identities of those killed have not been released.
The crash was reported at 6:57 p.m. on Tuesday at 9151 North Mason Avenue in Chatsworth, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).
The aircraft came down between two commercial buildings, where firefighters found the helicopter and nearby vehicles engulfed in flames. An LAFD spokesperson said the helicopter sustained significant damage.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition, the LAFD said in an update. Officials did not immediately identify the victims.
An LAFD spokesperson had earlier said one person killed appeared to have been a pedestrian in the parking lot.
NBC LA had been recording the scene of a nearby collision between an SUV and a bus, which left two people dead and several others injured. Several news helicopters were operating in the area at the time.
The station’s stream showed the helicopter slowly descending toward the ground before the feed suddenly cut off. NBC LA anchors later said they were having trouble contacting their colleagues.
The cause of the helicopter crash was not immediately known. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will handle the investigation.
