Three people died and 19 others were injured after two buses collided and caught fire in Calgary, Canada, according to emergency officials. One patient has life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews responded at approximately 1:10 p.m. Thursday to the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle Northeast, in the city’s Saddle Ridge neighborhood. Police identified one of the vehicles as a City of Calgary bus.

Firefighters dispatched from a nearby station realized immediately after leaving that the collision also involved a fire. Crews began extinguishing the flames, requested additional resources and worked to free a bus driver who suffered very serious injuries, Calgary’s fire chief said.

An EMS official said three people were pronounced dead at the scene and 19 others were injured. Ten patients were transported by ambulance to various hospitals, one with life-threatening injuries and nine with non-life-threatening injuries.

Five patients with non-life-threatening injuries were assessed at the scene and taken to hospitals by city bus for further evaluation. A police officer also suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Hazardous materials crews responded because one of the buses involved in the collision was powered by natural gas.

The fire chief said the more extensive fire was inside what he described as a “natural liquid gas bus,” while a smaller fire affected the other bus. Firefighters brought the flames under control quickly.

Authorities have not released details about how the collision occurred.
