2 pilots eject safely after Air Force training jet mishap near Alabama-Mississippi line
Two pilots ejected safely from a U.S. Air Force training jet after the aircraft was involved in a mishap near Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, according to base officials.
The mishap happened at about 12 p.m. Tuesday and involved a T-38 Talon II assigned to Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, the 14th Flying Training Wing said in a press release.
“They have been recovered. They are alive,” Adam Prince, public affairs director for Columbus Air Force Base, told The Dispatch. “We are assessing their injury status if any.”
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama told WVUA 23 News that deputies were responding to the incident, but said it happened in Lamar County. No additional details were immediately released about where the aircraft came down or whether there was damage on the ground.
The T-38 Talon is a twin-engine, supersonic jet trainer used by the Air Force to train pilots for fighter and bomber aircraft. Columbus Air Force Base, in eastern Mississippi near the Alabama state line, is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing.
The Air Force said the mishap will be investigated by a Safety Investigation Board.
